"Education has for its object the formation of character: This is the aim of both parent and teacher." - Herbert SpencerChad wondered what his friends would think. He knew that his new job not only would surprise them, but it would incite laughter! Chad, a teacher? No way! He had never really liked school himself, and he had struggled more than some. But after years in a job he didn't train for or like, he knew he needed to change. Becoming a teacher was not his first choice, but it wasn't that far-fetched either.
Chad's famed soccer career had come to a crashing end when he wrenched his knee. Yet now, following surgery, it was stronger than ever. His degree in science and a love for coaching was all he needed to convince himself that teaching in a high school might be a way to satisfy both loves. Midway through his teachers' training, he received a job offer from a prestigious high school.
"What are your goals for your students?" the principal asked during Chad's interview.
"I know this will sound idealistic, but I want them to love science. I want them, for maybe the first time, to see their connection to this place we call home. I want them to leave my class intent on making the world a better place to live." Chad paused. "And I want to be for them what every patient teacher was for me - hope."
Chad knew it sounded like a re-election speech, but he couldn't help it. He meant every word. For the first time, he felt he was right where he belonged.
Those who can, teach. Those who wish they could only complain.
Prompt: The ideals I want to inspire my students to meet are. . .
