"A true leader always keeps an element of surprise up his sleeve, which others cannot grasp but which keeps his public excited and breathless" - Charles de GaulleTess inspected her room one final time before the parents arrived.
Students' work assignments were prominently displayed, and volunteer sign-up sheets were in plain view. The room looked organized and creative. This was Tess's tenth open house night, but she still got butterflies as parents took their seats at the children's desks. She felt that she was more on display than her students' creations.
This was her chance to make a good first impression. It might be one of the only times she would see these parents face-to-face. She wanted it to be a positive experience - one that instilled trust and confidence in her ability to teach their children.
The room was packed - standing room only. Tess circulated through the crowd, handing out papers listing items for a scavenger hunt. She thought that might break the ice. Within minutes children and parents were navigating the room looking for the places and things on her list. When at last everyone returned to their seats. Tess relaxed as she saw the smiling, excited faces.
It was a good start to a great year.
